Careers In Manufacturing

By Louise Adams

What does FMCG mean?

The term FMCG basically means retail goods that get 'used up' quickly, within a number of days or weeks. The term FMCG is short for 'fast moving consumer goods.' FMCG's differ to goods such as kitchen appliances and other durable major appliances that are not usually replaced within one year.

Fast Moving Consumer Goods have a very short shelf life due to two reasons in particular. The first reason relates to the fact consumers need the goods quickly and frequently, the second is that the goods are often highly perishable therefore they need to be replaced quickly.

Fast moving consumer goods have an extremely short shelf life and certain types, such as fruit and veg, fresh meat, dairy products and others are highly perishable. Goods such as toiletries, alcohol and cleaning products also have extremely high turnaround rates.

When asked to describe what FMCG are customers usually describe them as being objects that need replacing frequently, are inexpensive and not big purchases that require lots of thought.

Marketers would view FMCG products as being high in volume, low in contribution margins, and having a high stock turnover.

If you are looking for a job within this industry then it makes good sense to register with a specialist recruitment consultant. Registering with a FMCG recruiter will give you access to jobs which you may not have already have come across. Often FMCG companies allow recruiters to work on vacancies on an exclusive basis meaning the jobs won't be advertised elsewhere.

Applying for roles through a specialist recruiter means that you will stand a better chance in getting your CV noticed. In the current job climate you may find that you apply for a job that hundreds of other people have also applied for, so using a recruiter will ensure that your CV gets pushed to the top of the pile.
