New York Public Criminal Records

By Ben Kingsley

Perhaps the most eminent state in the entire world is the New York State as it is a center for worldwide trade and economy which has an estimate population of 19.4 million for the year 2013. Indeed, it is the place where dreams do come true. True enough, New York really has a significant impact upon global commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment. In New York, meeting all kinds of people is quite possible. This can be fascinating as you get to encounter people from different walks of life. Nonetheless, trusting anyone is not easy and should be done very wisely especially if you meet new friends or even possible lifetime partners. Thus, doing a background check on an individual you hope to build a relationship with is a brilliant idea. All you have to do is request access for New York criminal records from the Division of Justice Criminal Services.

According to the New York state's law, it is highly punctuated that all vital records of people are accessible by any member of the public who needs it. These include criminal records. Therefore, several agencies were appointed to maintain copies of criminal records and assist people who wish to obtain a copy of such. The primary repository for the state's criminal records is the Division of Justice Criminal Services. Housed in this Division are the state's criminal history fingerprint files which are used to provide police departments and other authorized agencies throughout the state with the criminal records of arrested persons, and where authorized by statute, applicants for employment or licensure.

Furthermore, the Criminal Identification Unit which is under the Division of Justice Criminal Services is responsible for overseeing criminal records for the state plus all fingerprints related with misdemeanor and felony convictions. To ensure accuracy of results, all requests for criminal records are finger-print based searches. The required fee is $61.50 which is the Division's fee of $50 plus a processing fee of $11.50. Also, another agency where you can acquire criminal records in the state is the New York State Office of Court Administration which offers a state-wide criminal history record search for $65.

In addition, if you want to check the background of specific individuals, you can refer to the New York State Unified Court System which supervises the Office of Court Administration which fulfills appeals for criminal background checks. Both entities work together hand in hand to facilitate the promotion of law and Justice within New York. In the state, any member of the public can appeal for criminal background checks on any person they wish to investigate, although searches are based on names only. Since December 2009, New York has hired an outside firm called L-1 Identity Solutions to do these criminal background checks.

To request for personal criminal records, you must make an appointment with L-1 Identity Solutions in order to have your fingerprints taken as searches are fingerprint-based. You have to fill out a request form. The form must be filled out in its entirety. Input your information as the requestor such as your full name, address, phone number. If you want to have a background check on another person, provide the full name and birthdate of that individual you want searched. Any aliases should be included on your application in case sealed records not linked to your fingerprints may be located with your request. Bear in mind that applications with unclear or omitted information will be rejected. Each alias and each date of birth is counted an additional search. The application form along with two forms of identification and fee can be mailed or submitted in person. Once all of your application materials are in, along with a copy of your fingerprints, your request results will be out in seven to ten business days. The results can be mailed, emailed or picked up.

With Internet as the trend, searching for criminal records can be done online too as it is more efficient and more practical compared to the traditional way. You can actually hire the services of several independent online record providers as they also have an online database which you can access anytime you want. Compared to the traditional method, doing an online search for criminal records is by far the most practical way as these online record providers can provide you the records you want in a matter of minutes instead of the usual seven to ten business days. What more, you don't need to pay for each request you make. What you are only going to pay is a minimal fee and you can already have an unlimited access to their database. With over 19.4 million constituents in New York, it is quite an arduous task to demarcate anyone with a bad record. Thus, checking criminal records is really very essential as it does not only help protect yourself and your loved ones, but also, it is very much useful in the field of business especially when hiring applicants. In business, good relationships between the employers and the employees are very indispensable in creating a productive, profitable and a happy working environment and trust is the major factor in building such relationships. This is where background checks help both entities by verifying the facts and building the level of trust needed for the employers to make hiring decisions with assurance.
