Entrepreneur: Howard Shultz

By Franklin Skribbit

When it comes to Rags to Riches stories, there aren't many better than the story of John-Paul DeJoria. Before he and his colleague, Paul Mitchell, started their hair care line, he was nearly completely broke and temporarily homeless. This entrepreneur went from living on the streets of Los Angeles in his car, to owning what is now a billion dollar company. With a story like that, it is hard to imagine such success coming from so little. But it is his story, and it is true. Recently landing on Forbes Magazine's billionaire list, DeJoria is becoming increasingly known in the world, and has been extremely successful in many different ventures.

In addition to Paul Mitchell, his hair care line, DeJoria has also been extremely successful in a business venture regarding top of the line tequila. And with his multiple successes, we can easily see that it is more than just luck.

Most of her online biographies explain that she was a young, energetic, yet unsuccessful student that scraped her way through high school, made it through college, and worked 20 jobs by the time she was 23.

His life up till now has been wrought with financial difficulties, and it is perhaps this difficulty that has led him to become such a stand-up guy, even with his current wealth. A family man, he has a wife and six children, and he has held out through thick and thin.

Her story is kind of like those fairy tales where prince meets beautiful girl and boom! They are in love and married. What ever happened to dating, courting, or even talking? Two people work to find each other and once they do, that's it? The struggles are over? Hardly.

Howard Schultz became quite acquainted with Coffee through his work at Xerox Corporation. He quickly moved up the ladders and through his work as a general manager, had experience with a company called Hammarplast, that made parts for Coffee Makers. Through his experience in the company, he received many ideas which led him to taking some of the ideas and really going far with what he learned in his earlier years.

Although his skills as an entrepreneur have been cultivated since his youth, some budding business men may want to pursue a Business Administration Degree, Accounting Degree, or even a Business Management and Accounting Degree. Through the pursuit of these educational opportunities, you will increase your chances for success, and improve your ability to make smart business decisions.

Whether you hope to become an entrepreneur, go into Property Management or pursue a career in Forensic Accounting, Retail Sales Management, or Event Planning, DeJoria's example can help you get your ventures started on the right foot.

So Barbara, if you'd like to share a little more of what happened between that $1000 and the five billion you have now - awesome. If not, that's ok too. We still think you're pretty cool.
