How To Land An IT Job

By Darrel Jefferson

Certainly a degree will help you on your way to obtaining a career in Information Technology, but there are additional ways to pump up your resume that will certifiably get you the position that you have been dreaming of. "If you guys were the inventors of Facebook, you'd have invented Facebook."

Experts in the IT world agree that certifications put you in a position to take hold of the vast IT opportunities that continue to grow and expand. The majority of IT hiring managers agree that an IT certification is a fairly high priority when considering whether or not to hire someone. Clearly, being certified is important. But why a Microsoft certification?

It shows the people looking at your resume that you are everything they have been looking for. Not only do you have the ingenuity and originality necessary to create something new, but you also have the guts and the initiative to do it. Therefore proving that you are capable of doing it again, hopefully for their benefit. It also gives yourself experience, if you have yet to be given the opportunity.

But unlike human language where you can practice with another person, learning any coding language takes a lot of practice, a lot of mistakes, and a lot of "how to" internet searches. But your diligence will be rewarded.

Dumb phones are out, and smart phones are in. This means career in IT may include developing apps for smart phones and familiarity with mobile development for iOS and Android.

Everything is going to the cloud. "Cloud Computing" is a term for new distribution of computer programs and software through internet browsers instead downloading them to the hard drive of your computer. Abode did this recent with their popular Creative Suite. In the future, you will not need to download Microsoft Word software, you will be able open an internet window and open a new Excel spreadsheet or Word document.

A lot of getting a good IT job goes along the same lines as getting any job at all. People want to hire the people that they like. Going into an interview, have answers prepared for any potential question, and specifically think of stories that you can apply to the position you are applying for.

Second, be sure to pace yourself appropriately. While you don't want to attempt to learn too much information at once, making everything you learn seem more like a mess of information rather than a clear understanding, you also don't want to take too much time. The exams cover an extensive amount of information. While that information may take a long time to learn, it is also a lot of information to remember. The more time you take between study sessions, the less likely you'll be to be able to remember the information you've learned.

Obviously, dress well and stay professional. If you know anyone within the company at all, even if it is in an unrelated field, be sure that they know you are applying, and be sure that they are someone that likes you. Any words said for or against you by an already hired and respected colleague can make or break the decision to hire you.

So no, you don't need to have a degree to have a career in IT, but you need the skills and it doesn't matter if you got them in a Microsoft training course in Kuwait. Of all the above skills find your niche, do it well and you will have a successful career in the IT industry.
