Some Advice On Armorer Training

By Rob Smith

In order to keep the weapons functional, it is important that they are repaired timely. The mechanics who work to keep the weapons in a proper operational condition is called an armorer. To perform this task, some soldiers are given specialized armorer training.

Armorers are one of the oldest trades of the English army and have found their name in history. They have worked together with all arms, including infantry, cavalry, artillery and Special Forces. However, in US Army, this is no more a separate trade. This duty is performed by a general duty soldier who has undergone specialized course in weapon repair. Notwithstanding that, in any army, they handle varied weapon systems, and keep them functional.

This course is divided into three modules the basic segment, specialization segment and the refresher segment. In the basic segment, knowledge about a variety of arms is imparted. In this module, the candidate is taught about the nomenclature of various parts of the firearm. The functioning of the weapon is also explained. The candidates are trained in repairing work, and are skilled in performing service checks. This part of the program is compulsory, and lasts for 18 weeks.

In the second phase, the candidates specialize in a specific weapon system. The individual has the option to specialize in any of the systems like Glock, MP series or Colt. He may even specialize in two or three systems, but he has to undergo coaching for all of them separately. Usually this phase lasts for four weeks.

The duration of the last segment is the shortest. However, this phase of the course is crucial and important. This phase is for about two weeks, where the candidate is given information regarding the latest advancements about the weapon. This is carried out in order to gain knowledge and information about the modifications and changes in the weapons. The coaching is mandatory and has to be undertaken once every year.

Based on the above coaching modules, an armorer is graded and deemed fit to work on a particular class of firearms. However, the main aim of this training is to make them a jack of all trades, but master of one. The experience and exposure to various arms also make them skilled.

This occupation has become very popular in the civil society as well with the starting of shooting in fields like sports, movies as well as reenactment shows. Nowadays, there are many institutions and manufacturing companies, which are organizing the programs on armorer training. The service personnel cannot undertake this course, as it is not valid for defense.
