Talking About Disability, By Alec Sohmer

By Rob Sutter

When you become older, it's likely that you're not going to be able to work to the same level that you were able to before. However, there may be cases that arise when you feel like you have never been more physically able, meaning that you have to make changes even when you don't want to. Disability is where this comes into play and it's a rather complicated topic, as I'm sure you can imagine. However, names like Alec Sohmer understand what this entails in a broad sense.

If you were to tell me to give you the most basic of a definition of disability, I do not think that I'd be able to. It's one of the most detailed aspects to talk about and it's one that covers all kinds of conditions, both in terms of physical and psychological. You want to be able to look at a number of conditions and see whether or not they are severe, degenerative disc disease being one example. There are many factors that play into how disability is measured.

Of course, since the severity of certain conditions is going to vary, every person having his or her own viewpoints on the matter. However, if you can get by with certain items in your possession, chances are that your disposition is not going to be seen nearly as serious as others may be. For example, let's say that you have hearing loss and yet you have a hearing aid that is able to let you utilize 95% of the functionality of a particular ear. This is just one example out of many.

Amongst the many questions that can be asked, one of the important has to be this: does your condition prevent you from working to your fullest? You have such a condition that impedes your progress on the matter, no matter if it is cognitive, physical, or what have you. This is the kind of variable that has the attention of a number of authorities, Alec Sohmer included. Knowing whether or not you are able to work is vital for names along the lines of Sohmer.

As you can see, there are many different intricacies associated with disability and being able to tell you about this on my own is impossible. There are so many factors to consider and each type has separate rules to consider. Conditions that are rooted in the mind are worlds apart from those that are more physical, so you can't judge them as a whole. Instead, you have to pinpoint each one as its own separate entity and then go about further research as seen fit.
