Tackling Fear And Doubt When Starting A Business

By Cornelius Nunev

Beginning a small business is hard, specifically on the emotional level. Too many people allow fear and uncertainty to overwhelm them before they even start. Here are a few recommendations for dealing with anxiety and uncertainty, adopting individual growth and opening the door to business success.

Step No. 1: Accept no excuses

There are a lot of excuses that you can come with to keep away from beginning a business. There are some legitimate ones, such as time and money, but those only last for the short term and can be very easily surpassed. There are a ton of difficulties a person can come up with when they are scared to start the brand new business. Do not make excuses. They will only hinder your progress. Let go of the anxiety and let your company grow by moving forward.

Step No. 2: Do not be afraid

Fear and uncertainty plague even the most accomplished, confident people, so you shouldn't feel alone when they impregnate your consciousness. Recognizing fear for what it is - a self-preservation instinct that can be carried to self-defeating extremes - is essential for the successful small business entrepreneur. Encounter fear head on, and only you will remain.

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path.

Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

- The Bene Gesserit "Litany Against Fear" from Frank Herbert's "Dune" (1965).

Step No. 3: You do not have to stay comfortable

The sort of hard work necessary to get a small business off the ground and to maintain that business isn't comfortable. It's a day-in, day-out process, and there's never an off-season for a small business owner. You should be willing to do what you need to, speak with the right people and go where you must - all within legal parameters - in order to make a small company work. Anxiety and uncertainty over whether you are ready or willing will stop you cold.

Step No. 4: Choose and follow through

You need to first commit to the process and then finish it. It is always hard to try and get through everything without doubting yourself, but you will be much better off if you put the idea into motion and never stop. One little bump in the road should not be enough to break your spirits and stop you. Make sure you take action; do not just wish and hope.
