Knives have been around as long as man has needed to separate something. Over the thousands of years, knives have evolved from stone cutting tools to instruments made of specifically designed materials for all kinds of activities, to include outdoors, survival, and just plain everyday use.

There are those who love to keep a set or specific selection of knives at home. The most common type or variation of knife is the kitchen knife where it is the most frequently used knife. Knives are also a must have for those who are engaging in outdoor activities such as camping, hiking and hunting. With the increased demand in knives, more and more companies are also increasing in number. There are also companies who make cheap knives because they know that they can sell them. Someone who's serious about knives, wants the quality and durability. So how can people actually become a pro knife maker?

If you're looking to become a good knife maker you will need to know all there is to know with regards to knives. You should know that there are about a thousand of knife types and classifications in the market and have to know each one of these is your primary duty. The reason for this is that depending on the type of knife that someone is considering, construction process is different. A surgeon will always require a different type and classification of knife compared to an outdoorsman. We are designed differently, and constructed differently.

As one master knife maker put it, every blade is designed to serve a specific purpose. Being able to have an in-depth knowledge with regard to metalwork and creativity in designing a functional knife should be some of the few traits a master knife maker should possess. All such skills and knowledge should be present in an effective knife maker.

Most knife makers will tell you that, in their occupation, form meets function. Say, if you're looking to have a throwing knife then the master knife maker would design a knife that would fit the task. If someone is looking for a rugged hunting knife, it has to be designed in such a way that it is durable and yet performs the function that is demanded of it.

A knife maker can use various materials in order to create a masterpiece knife. The function of the knife usually dictates which type of material to be used to create the tool. There a lot of knives designed with materials for durability. A lot of knives will require a thicker and sturdier material for cutting hard things and there are also those knives that require a thinner but yet sturdy material to make thin slices.

Being a knife maker also makes you an artist. They might produce a knife that looks good, has an exotic handle, or a special function such as a foldout knife, or a knife specifically designed for cutting rope.

Therefore, being a master knife maker will require you to have that special skills and a good understanding about knives as well as the design and function that your knife should possess.
