What to ask an SEO Company

By Stephen Counsell

Getting started with SEO for your website can be confusing and getting your local SEO company in place can start with a simple search for and SEO company. How can you find out if they're any good though?

You'll need to have a chat with the local SEO company about what it is they do and what results you can expect over what period of time. It's best to have a clear idea of who your main inline competitors are before you speak to the SEO Agency so that they have a good starting point to work with.

Ask for an example of any reports they might supply you with. Monthly reporting is usual so check with them that you'll get a monthly report on work they do. Ask them if you'll be able to see results in the first second or third month and will the improvement continue? Usually SEO Work takes three months to be effective in the longer term.

Check if they can work with your web designer and if they'll include any development work in the SEO fees they charge you. Ask what Content Management Systems (CMS) they can work with and if they can work without and CMS when they need to make SEO changes on yoru website.

Once the onsite SEO is catered for you'll want to have some Link Building and social book marking expertise on board. Ask if they provide these services and make sure that they use a diverse set of domains and platforms to post links to. Google looks for diversity in linking domains. More domain names on different servers makes for a better link profile and looks more natural.

Social bookmarking is a form of back-linking that can be seriously beneficial to your rankings. Placing links and editorial on social sites like Facebook, reddit, tagged etc can even drive the right type of traffic directly to your site.

Next up is Web2.0 (web two point oh) sites. These are places like Squidoo where you can write whole articles and place author links back to your site thus creating even more back links.

You'll need an SEO consultant who understand the importance of regular content updates and internal site linking. Ask some basic questions about article writing and blogging services. Ask for examples of content they written recently.

Check that your SEO company understands the importance of the basics of On-Site SEO. Ask what there advice is on things like page titles and descriptions these should be unique for each page. H1 and H2 tags. There should be only 1 H1 tag on each page with multiple H2 tags to indicate document structure. Is there a need to make keywords bold? (yes is the answer for that one.).

You can start to see that none of the work that an SEO company will or could do for you is anywhere near rocker science but it can be quite time consuming if they are to get it right and provide the results that you want. Ask as many questions as you can before parting with your marketing budget, once the work is done there's no going back.
