Facts About Copper Nickel

By Kate Perez

Copper Nickel or CuNi is an alloy that primarily contains metals that are resistant to corrosion and biofouling such as nickel and copper. In some instances, other strong metals such as manganese and iron are added for specific purposes. The electrode potential of Copper Nickel is neutral to seawater and thus makes the alloy corrosion resistant. On this note, the alloy is used in numerous marine applications such as fish cages for aquaculture, sheathing of legs and risers on offshore platforms, heat exchangers and condensers, desalination units, and many more.

These metal alloys are also used as a material for building piping systems that are subject to harsh conditions. It took years of careful study and research before this alloy became the basic material for the marine building industry. Marine experts should know well these set of standards.

When CuNi was first formulated during the 1920s this type of alloy was composed of 70% copper and 30% nickel. A few years later, engineers added 2% manganese and 2% iron. This combination proved to have better resistance to erosion. The 90-10 CuNi alloy is used in piping systems that are submerged in seawater. Today, these two types of alloys are extensively used in the industry. The 70/30 CuNi alloy is more resistant to corrosion, while the 90/10 alloy is cheaper and can be used in most marine applications.

In order to achieve the optimum performance of CuNi, a great amount of thought should be given to the composition of alloys. Each should be in accordance with the world standard. For instance, the alloy must not be exposed to pollution. Restrictions to turbulence and velocity placed to promote safety and to ensure that the piping systems will perform to its fullest.

This alloy can only be made by people with the right skills and knowledge in this field. If you are planning to hire a company to manufacture or install your piping system for you, then look for marine engineering companies that are regarded well in local and international community. Hiring professionals for fabrication and pipe laying installations will not only help you save money, but it will also bring you security and peace of mind.
