Accounting Software

By Asim Al-Kurac

Assuming you are trying to make money with your business, a safe enough bet, then it is essential you record the your income earned and expenses. In the years before computers, and even today, businesses have done this manually. An example of this is the classic shoebox, stored (often full of receipts) in a closet not seeing the light of day until tax day comes. But those days are over, you're going to get left in the dust by more savvy competitors if you do not know where you spend your money and how much of it you are spending. Imagine saving a couple dollars a day on supplies, at the end of the day that comes to over $700 in extra money. Those types of small savings add up and can make a huge difference at the end of a year. There are a few major considerations to make when deciding on an accounting software, and here they are:

Total Package Software: Why run around opening a bunch of different websites/programs when it comes time to figuring out finances? Do not waste your time downloading or buying programs that only address one aspect of accounting, get the total package.

Reporting: you want your software to be able to tell you what you need to know at the click of a button. Need to see which expenses of have gone up in the past few months? This information shouldn't be more than a click or two away.

Integration: chances are your business isn't completely new, and you've been using something else to keep track of your costs, earnings, etc with something else. To start over with totally new software is inconvenient. You need to be able to integrate your old data into the new accounting software.

There are tons and tons of programs available that offer some form of accounting. We have looked at many and in the end our recommendation is a piece of software called Freshbooks. It is fairly simple and even offers video tutorials if you need help. Try Freshbooks out and you will not regret it.
