How Derry Could Have Used a Maine Collection Agency

By Rob Sutter

I'm sure that you look at the word "Derry" and you wonder what exactly it has to do anything. Well, if that's not a familiar enough word, think about this one: "It." The Stephen King novel-turned-TV miniseries was one that not only featured elements of drama but a sense of terror that only a horror story from King could possess. With so many deaths that occurred in the area of Derry, Maine, there's no question that a Maine collection agency would be working on behalf of distraught loved ones.

The first true casualty of the movie was Georgie Denbrough, who encountered the clown within the sewers known as Pennywise. Georgie was lured in with the promise of balloons and candy and, like any child, he accepted the offer. However, Pennywise would soon kill the child and it would wind up bringing the Denbrough family into a total state of disarray. His older brother, Bill, was especially traumatized by this and it wouldn't be until thirty years later that he would be able to get revenge on Pennywise.

If any family would want to hire a Maine collection agency, I believe it would have to be the Denbroughs. After all, they were lead to believe that Derry was the ideal place to raise a family and that sense of trust was destroyed. They'd be able to hire on any sort of reputable agency like R.R.S. in order to target the city as a whole for emotional damages. After all, who in the world is going to believe that a shape-shifting killer clown was behind all of the disappearances and deaths of children in Derry?

It's not like the deaths ended when they were kids, either. On the contrary, Eddie Kaspbrak, who was once an asthmatic child, grew up to be more or less a shut-in who continued to live with his overprotective mother. In his adult years, Eddie attempted to fight the creature that was previously known as Pennywise. In his attempts to do so, Eddie was wounded and killed. Out of all of the children within the group of "Losers" that Bill was part of, Eddie was unable to get away with less than a scratch.

Even if most of the main characters went on to live happy lives after Pennywise's chaos, I don't think the impact of Derry will ever fully be behind them. There are simply too many sour memories to be had in that place, no matter how badly they may try to suppress. Even though the impact lingers, the fear of the clown returning does not. In fact, the only place where Pennywise can ever reside in the deepest recesses of their nightmares.
