Gemstone Jewelry and Why Semi-Precious Matters

By Dr. Kevin Carlile

We all have our preferences when it comes to jewelry and even gemstones. You are the only person to decide which criteria will have the most weight when it is time to make a buying decision. In this article, we'll be discussing some of the most important considerations to keep in mind when picking out gemstones.

There is a mineral, corundum, which is what two very different gems come from: sapphires and rubies. However, if you priced real, high quality rubies you will see they cost much more than sapphires. Sapphires are usually thought of as blue, but they can come in several different colors, including yellow and even purple. Some of the common factors for determining the price of a sapphire has to do with the particular cut, size of course and how clear it is. Sapphires can make for elegant and stunning rings, necklaces among other types of typical jewelry. While high quality natural sapphires are quite costly, synthetic stones can be quite affordable.

We all know everybody loves diamonds and emeralds but are not really affordable, so the logical choice would be to go with semi-precious gems. We will not tell you what to buy, and we also want to say that perceived value is in the mind of each person. Marketing may very well be the prime reason the tradition of such high value still exists with diamonds. Social beliefs change throughout time, and that is evidenced by the fact that stones relegated to semi-precious status now commanded precious status a long time ago. That is the very reason it is not necessary to get so hung-up on precious versus semi-precious.

When you talk about fake gems, it is the simulants that you are talking about. The top three gems, emeralds, diamonds and rubies are typically what the simulant market targets. So, no simulant should ever cost what the real thing costs. Keep in mind that truly natural gemstones are becoming increasingly rare.

Obviously you will find a very wide range of appeal and tastes when it comes to gemstones. When you start to study this fascinating topic, you come to realize just how many types of gemstones there are. It does not matter what others think concerning your jewelry, as long as you are happy with it.
