A Guide For Choosing Lights For Heliport

By Arthur Brooks

Technology has made airports and airstrips more effective and efficient to land on. Without lights in the airports, helicopters could be very difficult to land safely. With lights for heliport, people can travel to and from airports anytime easily and safely. There are many reasons for installing solar lights for the heliport.

They are easy to install. With solar lights, there is not a lot of trenching during installation. Furthermore, it cannot be easily interrupted by any operations of the airfield. During installation also, it does not need any special attention or specialist. People who have an already established helipad enjoy this more.

Nowadays, the cost of living is becoming high, this means that airfield owners should identify ways of saving costs. One of the best ways of saving more on costs is reducing power consumption in the airstrip. Using AC lamps is cheaper in terms cost per unit. Also, solar lights help to save more money. For instance, the initial cost is low and the maintenance is also low. This will help to save on more costs.

Most times, electricity has not been reliable to the society, this because, it can be affected by weather changes like heavy rains and a shortage of water which is known to generate it. Lack of electricity also makes it difficult for installation of an AC helipad. For this reason, solar lamps are more reliable. It has allowed installation of airfield lights in local areas.

Airstrip owners would want to save on costs. To do this better, this they should install more energy-saving equipment in the airstrips. Most preferably is the installation of the solar system since they only produce a lot of light with less heat.

Though installation of the lighting system in airstrip should be permanent, circumstances might force it to be moved to other places. Therefore, some factors have to be considered before purchasing the lighting equipment. Some include the weight which should be light and the portability. The lifespan should also be factored in.Special factors like the military sections have benefited from solar helipad. They can easily install them in suitable places that can enable them to spot their enemies easily.

It is advisable that during the night, operations in the airfields, TLOF, taxi routes, and windsocks should be designed in a way that they should be light. Other useful factors that should be considered in the design of the airfield include the landing direction lamps and heliport identification beacons. This will help to facilitate operation in the airfields. For instance, the departure of the helicopters and giving directions to the planes.

There are different types of heliports. One of them is private. This is also known as prior permission required (PPR). This is owned for personal use. This means that if you want to land on it, you must seek permission. Another type is general aviation. In this the type, the field is open to the general public. Being located on public land does not mean it is only owned by the public. It can also be a combination of both the private and public. To determine whether it is general aviation or private, you must know who funded it. Funders include Federal Aviation Administration(FAA), Airport Improvement Program (AIP).
