Looking For Record Player Needles

By Scott Schmidt

Many music lovers will still own and play vinyl records and will need a turntable to enable them to listen to their collection of music. Nowadays, compact discs and digital players are more common and finding a spare for a turntable can sometimes be difficult. If you are searching for replacement record player needles there are a few useful places to look and a little care is required.

A turntable stylus is probably the most important component as it will deliver the sound from the disc. If your needle is worn, it will produce a poor sound and can also cause damage to your vinyl records. Many types of stylus have been produced and it is important that you fit one that will be suitable for your particular model of audio equipment.

The first place where you will find replacement needles is in a specialist audio retailer which can be found in many neighborhoods. Some of the outlets will stock many parts for models currently in production and some out of date turntables. If they do not have a suitable one in stock that matches yours, they can usually order one in from a manufacturer.

The internet can also be a great place to source a needle for your deck and there are many web based retailers that supply these. After checking the stock against your needles serial number, they can find you a match. Some of the web sites can do a search from a photo of your stylus if you do not have the details. If you order from one of the web based suppliers, you may have to add some shipping costs to your bill.

If an internet retailer is unable to supply you with a suitable stylus you can try a web based auction site. Many needles will be listed for sale and you may find one that is compatible to yours for a bargain price. If your needle is going to be an expensive purchase, it is advisable to contact the seller directly, before you bid on the item.

Another useful pace to get a hard to find item is at a local junk shop or nearly new store. Many of these shops will have old record payers in their stockroom and you can often find a match for your needles. If you do find a suitable replacement, it is worth buying the whole player in case you need other spares for your equipment in the future.

If the maker of your record deck is still in business then it can be a good idea to buy your replacement needle from them. If they do not make that particular model anymore they will still usually have some spares in stock. They will also tell you where you can look for parts if they are unable to supply a suitable match.

After finding a needle that is suitable for your deck, it can be worth buying a few if they are available. Needles will eventually wear or become damaged and it is worth keeping a spare at home in case you need to replace one. If you are not fitting your new stylus immediately, then they should be kept in the box to prevent any damage.
