New York public criminal records are documents that contain information about the crimes and offenses committed by a resident of the state. Such document is a public file which means that the residents have the freedom to access it. It is, however, necessary to be equipped with knowledge about such documents.

One of the most common reasons why residents of New York request for a copy of a criminal record is to conduct a background check. Employers are among the people who regularly request for a copy of a criminal record. By checking on the background of the people who works for them as well as potential business partners, the business would be able to avoid any possible problems in the workplace. Residents of New York also look into the criminal records of the state to check on the background of the people around them. This helps them to feel safe and secured in their neighborhood. The document is also used by the authorities when they conduct a criminal investigation.

A criminal record would contain information about the crimes that an individual has committed. Just like any other public government document, a criminal record would not be valid without the personal information of the individual involved. One would know the real name of the person together with the birth details and a description of how the person looks like. All of the crimes and violations that the individual has been reported for are indicated on the document. It contains the charges filed against the person and the sentence given to the individual. Details of the person's arrest are also indicated on the public document.

A fingerprint scan is necessary when requesting for a copy of a criminal record in New York. The requesting individual is also required to present two valid proof of identification to have the request processed. The state of New York allows its residents to get only a copy of their personal files. It would cost $60 to request for one's personal criminal record. One can get a copy of the criminal record of other people with the help of a lawyer to notarize the request.

The criminal records of New York are managed by the Division of Criminal Justice Services under the Criminal Identification Unit. The office is responsible for keeping track of all the criminal records of the state thus it is tasked to provide copies of such documents to the local residents. The local county court can also provide copies of the criminal incidents in the area, however, the search is only limited to the incidents that took place within the county only. Both the state office and county court offices accepts mailed-in requests, however, one may need to wait for a few days before the results of the search can be obtained.

Waiting can be avoided if the search is done online. Doing it through the Internet can save you time and effort since the search can be done even without leaving home and the results are delivered after just a few clicks on the mouse. There are websites that offer to search for a criminal record without charging you for any service fees. Residents of New York still opt to pay for the service to get quality results and information that can be used right away.
