Tips For Performing Maintenance On Your Golf Course Irrigation System

By Janet Wallace

Golf courses have to be watered regularly during the dry season, and this means that each management team has to check on its irrigation system before releasing water for the first time after the rains. Various problems in the system are bound to be discovered when the pumps are opened to start releasing water. To avoid such problems, you have to be armed with techniques and best practices that can keep your golf course irrigation system running smoothly in all seasons of the year.

Just like other equipment found on the turf the irrigation systems must be maintained now and then. The same maintenance done to sprayers and mowing devices should be administered to the system. As such, you will save costs that arise when experts are brought to repair simple things that could have been done by anyone who came to the problematic point.

The check for the current problem should begin from the obvious parts of the system. Valves play a significant role in controlling water flow, and when one of them is interfered with, water cannot flow as required. Ensure that each pipe or valve is on for the water to flow smoothly. If water does not move after such details have been attended to, you can proceed into bringing in experienced experts.

Golf courses are fitted with either automatic or manual systems. The devices are controlled differently and each attendant should be conversant with the controls. Something could happen when they are dormant, and a restart should be done before an expert is brought in. Read and understand the operation manual before you start punching any button on the interface.

Irrigation systems that run across the course are controlled from one point where an LCD monitor is kept. From this monitor, you learn how the machines are operating, and you can conduct any change in the amount of water released using them. However, after some time they get stalled, and you can reinstate them by putting off for about ten minutes where after they go back to their normal working condition.

Another factor that contributes to system failure is blown fuses that fail to complete the electric circuit. This happens due to overloading and installation of a circuit breaker can help minimize such situations. A replacement of the fuse can help solve the problem, and if nothing changes, then you can call an electrician to come in and check whether the challenge is experienced due to wiring issues.

Replacement parts for the system should be made available at the facility. Some parts are worn out at no expected time, and such spares can fasten your replacement procedure. However, you have to equip your store with pieces that match what has been installed to avoid keeping the wrong inventories. As such, you will not have to rush in and out of town looking for the devices when the systems have already failed.

Regular maintenance of any machine increases its lifespan and facilitates its efficiency. Most problems are developed when you keep on ignoring them and when you realize there is a problem, it has grown to the highest magnitude. Therefore, make it your business to check most parts of the system on a weekly basis.
