Knowing When To Repair Your Muffler Vs. Replacing It With An Auto Repair Shop In Lincoln Park

By Jamie Cudjoe

When your car has spent considerable time on the road, the muffler may begin to let you know that it needs to be repaired or replaced.

When engines make loud, rattling, rumbling or hissing noises, this is often due to worn mufflers. It can also be attributed to a failing resonator or catalytic converter. If you think that you smell exhaust while the vehicle is in operation or if fuel economy is on the decline, the muffler could be leaking. This usually means that the muffler must be replaced.

When cars overheat quickly and easily, this often means that the muffler is functioning poorly. When cars have unusually high temperatures after just a few minutes of operation, getting prompt repair services is essential.

To perform your own inspection, raise your car up with a jack to see the undercarriage. Muffler service is definitely required if there is more water than would be created by condensation or if there are noticeable holes. When there are multiple leaks or if the muffler has become clogged with suit, it is probably time to invest in a new one.

An auto repair technician can inspect the exhaust system to determine whether the muffler or another part is damaged. Minor holes can be fixed with a little welding. If the leak is larger than a pinhole, though, the muffler (or other damaged part) may have to be replaced. Sometimes, small components of the muffler can be fixed without replacing it altogether.

If you think that a failed muffler is the problem, then you should take care of it right away. The costs of these repairs tend to increase in relation to how long you wait. When mufflers are unable to direct exhaust away from vehicles, deadly carbon monoxide gases can start to build up at their interior. This is all the more dangerous when the weather is cold, given that drivers tend to keep the heat on the windows closed during these times.
