What To Know When Shipping Human Remains From Abroad

By Iva Cannon

It is common to have members of the family living away from home. They may be there for business, work, or study. Others may have gone temporary for vacation. If any of them happens to die in the foreign land, their bodies would be required to be transported back to their home country for interment. A few procedures are required for you to get necessary authorization and documentation to have the body home. Shipping human remains requires special means of transport that ensure dignity and care.

There are several human remain shipping companies that you can choose from to accomplish the task. However, you should be sure that they have offices in your country. You may have local mortuary companies with links to international mortuary shipping firms. You can use such firms, as they are aware of the local regulations and other important factors.

All requests to ship the body back home will have to be verified by the country authorities and your home consulate. The embassy may require that you to provide the deceased passport and work permit alongside the application. If the death happened in unexplained circumstances, the authorities may require to first complete investigations on the body before releasing it.

Cremation is an option that your family may consider. The trend is rising and becoming accepted in many quarters. Cremation is a cheaper option compared to bringing the body home. Less space is required for the cargo. Furthermore, if your country has so many requirements for transporting human remains, you can go around by having cremated remains instead. Cremation also removes the urgency common in transporting human bodies due to deterioration.

In some cultures, the cremated remains are distributed to close family members that may be living in faraway locations. You may also need to send the cremated remains to a craftsperson to have these remains in a blown glass or other forms of art for preservation. All this is still regarded to as transporting the dead and treated as such.

Companies that transport the cremated remains do so within the framework of the set law. Cargo of this nature is not transported like other cargo but given a priority and special packaging. It is a show of respect to send the dead in a dignified manner. This makes the service a little more expensive.

The cremated remains can be packaged in simple wooden boxes, glass to decorative urns. If these remains are to be shipped for long distances padding is important. This means that you will need to have two containers, an inner counter, and an outer container. The inner container should be hardy enough to absorb any shock that may come from handling.

The cremated remains are only transported internationally if they are not prohibited in individual country. The package is sent as priority or express mail to the destination. In addition, the packaging should be done according to regulations that may be in place in the destination country and sent in a funeral urn.
