Checking Your Eyes Annually Is Very Important!

By Theodore Rosenberg O.d.

A yearly eye exam is a good idea. Some people actually have concerns that warrant exams or office visits more often than once per year. One must understand that an eye examination is not only a simple vision check. A comprehensive eye examination is a fairly complicated series of tests that not only checks your eye sight, but also neurological function, eye pressure, eye muscle coordination and health of the external and internal eye structures.

You could think that eye examinations are only for individuals with noticeable vision troubles who may need an initial prescription or brand-new spectacles prescribed, however that is not always the case. Eye tests could also show very early indicators of glaucoma, diabetes, strabismus (crossed eyes), hypertension and arthritis. By catching this very early you can avoid having permanent eye damage.

Everybody must see the eye doctor frequently. An excellent guideline to adhere to is to have your eyes checked regularly till you are 40 and then every two years thereafter. Adults that have no family history of eye disease and generally have great vision, an eye exam every a couple of years is recommended if the patient is under the age of forty.

In today's world, however, small screen devices has increased our visual demand tremendously. If you begin having eye problems using your cellphone or while surfing the internet, you may want to schedule your eye exam a sooner. If you are wearing contact lenses, get your eye exam done yearly.

Kids must have their vision evaluated as soon as they start going to school and then every year or so after. Even if you have not a problem with your eyes, it is very important to see an eye examination doctor once a year after the age of 65, to rule out eye problems.

Remember to place your eye exam on your yearly calendar to make sure that you do not forget.
