Merchandising Strips For Boosting Impulse Shopping

By Ed Striper

Merchandising strips are used as a retail product display mechanism that boosts impulse shopping. It's a simple length of material that allows for merchandise to be clipped, hooked or stuck on it at regular intervals. Just hang the strip with something such as an S-hook anywhere it can entice shoppers to pick up the items pegged on it.

Clipstrips are often found in shops that use POS displays. Most of the goods offered are items that shoppers did not have on their mind. For example, convenience stores and supermarkets have disposable razors, batteries, gum, pocket knives, key chains and tiny stuffed animals in displays close to the checkout counter.

People find it hard to resist the urge to add a couple or more such minor items to their cart just before they hit the counter. It can also be used for cross-marketing of accessories associated with a specific product. A shoe shop will have socks, polish and other such items on clipstrips.

A toy store can sell batteries hanging on strips next to a rack of toys that requires the same kind of battery. An electrical goods or consumer appliance vendor can have clipstrips filled with screwdrivers and other tools and accessories that appliances need for installation. Studies have shown that POS displays combined with cross-marketing can enhance sales by up to 30 percent.

Merchants can get such clipstrips in several different types. The basic difference is regarding reusability, since metal strips can be restocked while the cheaper plastic and cardboard ones are disposable. Roll clipstrips allow merchants to customize the length to match the number of products.

Merchandising strips come with clips, adhesive or hooks to help attach the goods to the strip. The adhesive type is used with packaged goods without hang holes. The clipstrip itself also needs accessories such as an S-hook, adapter clips or locking screws so that it can be hung, clipped or affixed at a particular location.
