Handling Risk In Timber Harvesting PA

By Rebecca Nelson

Lumbering is a common practice which is widely done in many parts of the world. This has become a source of income for a considerable population. Even so, there are quite a lot of risks that come along with the harvesting of trees. Detailed from below are important aspects of managing the risks in timber harvesting PA to consider.

Controlling menaces which might occur through hazardous trees. Trees which have grown weak due to various aspects are considered to be hazardous. Such aspects include heavy storms, old age and fire outbreaks. There are possibilities of having the trees fall in the wrong direction or having hang-up branches falling on the assistants. For that reason, a critical examination of these possibilities should be taken to ensure the safety of the harvesters.

Cutting trees using the manual procedure is preferred. The manual tree cutting procedure usually requires the use of chainsaws. This type of tasks requires many people to assist in different activities. Workers helping in leaning the tree towards the opposite direction of the feller are always in jeopardy. Such peril can be avoided if a critical assessment was made to determine the ground elevation, possibility of wind and choosing a ground with less surrounding vegetation.

Threats incurred during the thinning process. Thinning in lumbering involves the removal of small trees to pave enough space for strong trees to grow. The wood that is cut down is usually used in the manufacture of fencing poles. The harvesters should be accurate in their assessment of these trees since they tend to hang on other tree branches. Also, harvesters should be careful of hanging branches of other trees as well.

Possibilities in harvesting with machines. Modern lumbering has seen the invention of machines which can cut down trees or assist in leaning and logging as well. Such machines need to be handled very carefully since they can fall the tree towards the direction of the cutter. Therefore, the harvester or expert handling them should effectively communicate with the other people involved to ensure that they are safe before and when cutting the tee.

Considering wildlife habitat and biodiversity is also noted. Timber harvesting can lead to the destruction of natural habitat of wide animals. Therefore, harvesters should consider the nesting season of common birds in the respective forest to avoid affecting them. The harvesters can as well leave tree trunks which are important for rodents and other species such as hare and hedgehogs. This maintains the natural appearance of their surrounding which is suitable for their survival.

Reestablishing harvesting sites. Every lumbering process leaves the respective area damaged. Therefore, necessary measures should be taken to avoid soil erosion which is the most common effect that results from this practice. The most common procedure include replacement of the tree seedling in the respective area, removing any temporary structure made for transportation and restoring cleared surfaces which are used as roads.

Most forests that have this kind of operations are under the protection of the forestry department. Therefore, any lumbering operations should be done with their authorization to ensure that every risk management measure is considered. Failure to comply with this can lead to prosecution due to illegal lumbering.
