Playing the game itself on various courses allows one to compare the design in these courses so that they can know how to come up with better designs.

In field, in order to work as a landscape architect, one needs a license to practice in the state concerned. Obtaining a license involves passing the LARB-administered examination. The LARB administers this exam many times in a year to make it easy for people to sit for it. The requirement for sitting for this exam is a degree and 1-4 years of experience. These requirements vary from state to state however.

The licensure examination is divided into five subdivisions. Failing in any of the subdivisions denies one a chance to be licensed. Some states also administer mandatory state examinations.
