Swimming is great exercise and a fun activity for people of all ages. It can sometimes be hard however, to find places to swim in metropolitan areas and even in rural areas unless there are lakes and ponds to play in. For people interested in water sports, you can find a lot of swimming pool statistics that might amuse you. Many others are very sobering and will make you think the next time you let your children jump into a pool.

Children from about seven to their mid teens spend more time in recreational swim activities than anyone else. Most parents are familiar with the little blow up pools that can be purchased for a fairly small fee. Babies and toddlers tend to love splashing around and playing with floating toys. At any given time, approximately sixty-five percent of the people who are paddling around in a pool do not even know how to swim.

If you are a homeowner, and you are considering adding a pool to your backyard, you have two basic choices. You can go to the expense of having an in ground structure built. This is preferred by most, but is cost prohibitive for many. A more economical approach would be to purchase an above ground. With some friends and neighbors, it is possible to put one together in one afternoon.

The vast majority of owners use chlorine to keep their pools clean and free of mildew, bacteria, and mold. The tablets are easy to purchase and add to the filter system. The acidity levels must be tested regularly to ensure the facility is safe for use. Chlorine is a chemical however, and some people object to using it in their systems.

About fifteen percent of pools are salt water. This can be a good solutions for those who are sensitive to chlorine or object to the chemical aspect. By using salt, you eliminate the unpleasant odor and stinging sensation associated with chlorine. It is safer for your children and pets as well.

Pools are not without danger. Every year almost a half million people drown or are killed in other water related accidents. Three quarters of children under fifteen, who drown, die in private pools, and more toddler deaths result from drowning than any other cause. Some misinformed parents believe putting float devices on their little ones' underarms keeps them safe. This is not true at all. Any child that can not swim should wear a life vest even in pools.

Individuals who swim regularly will see all kinds of health benefits. It is good for the heart, and strengthens muscles throughout the body. You can reduce stress and cholesterol levels by participating in this activity. It is also a great way to relax for people from one to one hundred.

As long as people understand the risks associated with pools, they will probably come to love the sport. After learning to swim, regularly participating in this activity is something you can enjoy all your life.
