Searching For A Professional Amplifier Repair

By Kathleen Price

Most guitar players will also own an amplifier and these pieces of equipment need looking after properly. When your amp fails and needs attention you will need to find a company for amplifier repair to fix the problem. There are a few things to be considered before having any work done on your kit.

There are many amplifier manufacturers and each model is different and will do various things. An head unit, which is used by professional guitarists, will require a separate speaker cabinet to project the sound. The other type of amp is a combo, which will have a speaker built in to the cabinet and these are popular for amateurs, and people who just play for fun.

A valve amplifier is a specialized piece of equipment and will need a little more maintenance than a solid state model. Spare valves are usually carried by gigging guitarists and they will need changing if they start to fade out of fail completely. Any work that is done on a tube amplifier should be done by a professional technician to avoid damaging these expensive pieces of kit.

If you own a solid state amplifier then a routine service is also highly recommended. A simple repair can often be done by the player using a few basic tools that most people will have in their homes. The more complex faults will need to be looked at by an amplifier technician and the majority of guitar stores offer a reliable repair service.

When you are doing your own repair work, the spares you need can be purchased from an online retailer, or in a high street store that specializes in guitars. You need to make sure that when you buy your spares that they are compatible and covered by a guarantee. Used items such as control pots and speaker parts can sometimes be used as long as they are of the correct spec and have been properly tested.

If you are buying spares to do the repairs to an amp, some care needed when you are ordering. Always try and source manufacturer spares when possible and these can be found for most modern amps and some of the older ones. Many vintage amps are worth a substantial amount of money and using original spares is essential to maintain their value.

If you are a budding electrician and wish to do your own amp repairs there are some great publications with diagrams and also step by step video guides to help. After making sure that you have the correct spares and tools you can begin your repairs. It is essential that you have your work checked by an electrician when you have finished to ensure the amp will function safely.

The prices of amp repairs will differ with each model depending on the amount of work required. Costs can range from a few bucks for a simple solder repair to thousands for major modifications and rebuilds. Using a web based firm to do your repairs will often be cheaper, but the costs of shipping the amp will need to be factored in to the total cost.
