While not compulsory, these tests play a very important role in the admissions policies of most colleges and other institutions of higher education. It is true that there are some colleges that do not require applicants to submit their test scores. It is common knowledge, however, that all the better colleges where places are coveted will not even consider an applicant that not only sat for the tests but that also earned very high scores. Schools, students and parents all take these tests very seriously. Many students start their preparation years before they actually sit for the test. Some even take the test during their junior year in high school, comfortable in the knowledge that they can repeat it during their senior year if the results of the first test is not satisfactory. Repeating the test carries no penalties whatsoever.

The admission tests and the importance with which they are viewed have given birth to a large industry catering for students that want to do well. There are numerous books, websites, videos and other material that aim to help students in their preparation. Great care should be taken, however, to use only materials and courses that are offered by reputable suppliers.

For many students and their parents high SAT scores is a very high priority. Admission to a fine and reputable college can definitely be instrumental in future success. However, high scores are not the be all and end all. It is necessary to lead a balanced life that will portray the student as well rounded.
