Advantages Of GPS Machine Control Files In Earthmoving

By Mayra Pierce

Global Positioning System or as commonly known as GPS that is usually used in phones and car navigations, are also utilized by the earthmoving industries. A lot of leading heavy equipment manufacturers and corporations have applied the technology in their processes. They have been utilized in constructions for canals, berms, railway beds, levees, roads, causeways, and for land grading.

Due to demands for cost effective production in most industries, a lot of the production has developed advances and innovation in order to meet these demands. GPS machine control files is being utilized in the earthmoving industry in order to spend less for resources. It would also make work easier and faster.

A lot of heavy equipment corporations have been dominating this market sector and has been advancing this technology for quite a while already since the late 1990s. The system for machine control simply compared the position of the blade with the current location of the equipment. It can indicate the difference or can make adjustments automatically. This is where the role of the GPS takes place.

A lot of 3D and 2D software are now developed to assist this procedure. The model of the topography is then imported and visualized in these 3D and 2D programs for the operator to conveniently study the area even further. Many companies are developing software of their own while also upgrading and improving them after each revision to provide better accuracy.

Two types of system are being utilized for the earthmoving procedure in heavy equipment industries. They can be distinguished as either Fully Automatic or Indicate Only. The two of them are systems that can either use one or two receivers. With only one receiver, the guidance system is very limited on the position of the machine. But with two receivers, it allows two points which can also give the angle as well.

Having an accurate topographic map and design would fully utilize the GPS capabilities and give accurate results. These files are most likely from an engineering firm and then can be converted to the display for GPS. A few guidance systems has the capability to define the elevation and angle of the grade, too.

Here are the heavy equipment that are installed with this guidance system. Compactors, Scrapers, Hydraulic Excavators, and Motor Graders. This is a great advantage for the machines for them to have higher accuracy, efficiency, and cost effectiveness. This can give lesser people on the field as well, making it more convenient.

A machine installed with this system can cost to around one hundred million dollars. When used to the full potential, it can give back to more or less thirty percent of the productivity compared to that from traditional methods. Because of its high accuracy, a lot of projects are requiring the use of GPS in order for them to have lesser expenses.

Although it has limitations to its effectivity due to the environment since it utilizes signals to work. So this should be taken into consideration in the project site where it is located and what are some obstructions that are nearby. Roofs of buildings or any structure close to the site may create a dead zone for the satellite. Although overall Global Position System used in Earthmoving has been the most efficient and productive method and can be also developed even further.
