The Significance Of OOH Advertising

By Ina Hunt

Marketing can be done to consumers who are in transit, at given commercial locations (such as malls), waiting (for example in queues) and to those in public places. OOH advertising is used to do this. It is an acronym for out of home advertising and it is that which reaches the consumer while they are out of home. It is split into four main categories, namely: billboards, transit, street furniture and alternative.

Billboard promotion is a long-time out of home marketing format that has seen significant growth over the years. Though traditional billboards are still common, digital billboard displays have been installed and they too are becoming popular. Billboards still remains as one of the most dominant forms of outdoor advertisement, taking up a sizable chunk of the out of home marketing market. They generate a lot of revenue hence their popularity.

Another form is the street furniture publicity, which is mainly found in urban centers. It is seen mostly in news racks, bus shelters, bicycle racks, retail outlets, newsstands and also in malls. They are positioned in close range to pedestrians and shoppers for eye level view. It provides communities with amenities such as bus shelters making them beneficial for the communities in which they are situated. This is because the maintenance of such amenities is the duty of street furniture enterprises and not the community where it is based.

If the advertisements are on-the-move, then this is transit marketing. The advertisements are placed on trucks, buses, taxis, subway advertising and anything that is moving. This form can also include fixed static advertising in train and bus stations. Also, in airports, where businesses use marketing to address audiences who are travelling, transit advertising can also be found. Since it provides revenue, it is accepted by municipalities and city authorities.

Alternative marketing can be found in rest areas, stadiums, lunch trucks, lunch trucks, on gas pumps and other formats that are non-traditional. Alternative advertisements gives business enterprises the chance to communicate with consumers in areas where they least expect.

Together, street furniture, transit and alternative media forms are responsible for a large sum of total outdoor revenue. As a matter of fact, some of these formats take up a larger portion of advertisements than the traditional billboards. Other forms, for example lunch truck advertisement get placed on large industrial food trucks which serve the public at break, lunch and later for their dinner. Billboard styles, out of hand supplies and samples are offered by these trucks.

The out of home marketing industry consists of a host of operators based in several parts of the world. All these operators represent all of the four major categories of outdoor publicity. These operators range from large public companies and multinational media corporations to small ones that may be independent or even family-owned businesses.

Due to its capacity to get the message to consumers easily from almost anywhere outside their homes, out of home advertisement has become the medium of choice for most advertisers. Top brand in telecommunication, real estate, finance, retail and food services rely on the medium. Its ability to engage the consumers who are on-the-go makes it a powerful medium since it is very likely to influence consumers into a purchase. Apart from the advertisement companies, lots of other people get to benefit from the out home advertisements in various ways.
