Educating Communities On Addiction And First Steps In Prevention

By Brenda Brown

There are many forms of addiction but the most common of these are illegal drugs. Continued use of these addicting substances may result in interfering with your responsibilities like work, relationship and health. Addicted people might not notice that their changed behavior is causing problems for other people around and himself as well.

The quantity of people getting addicted is steadily increasing and there must be something that should be done to change this. Intervention and prevention methods like educating communities on addiction should be implemented in order to help people understand its negative effects. Orange County in California have programs like these which help tackle these problems in the community.

Most victims of substance abuse are children which are lured and tempted into using it by friends and the peer pressure they feel which makes it hard for them to resist. The role of parents in helping their kids to be educated about the negative effects to their mind and body by doing these activities is important. These are some things which parents can say and teach their children.

Saying no is alright and never be afraid to say it to your friends. Children are afraid to receive negative reactions from friends so they do not like to say no to them. They are being told that everyone is doing it which is a like. Make decision of your own and never let anyone force you in doing something that is not right.

Choose your friends carefully and avoid those kids who drink alcohol and take illegal drugs. You can get along with them without needing to do the things they are doing. Avoid negative peer pressure by getting involved with community and school activities instead. Do things you love doing, for example sports, arts or music.

Have a connection with adults like your parents and talk to them about your life and rely on them. Talk to them about anything even including drugs and alcohol use. They could provide you with advises based on their experiences before on those matters. It is also important that they can trust you so they will be confident in letting you make your own decisions.

Be informed on the negative effects of alcohol and drug abuse may bring to your body and the relationship you have with the people around you. There are some misconceptions about them being shared around so learn which one is true or not. Share these information you found and be a positive role model for your friends.

Plan ahead and be prepared in going out with friends somewhere like party. Have a person you could call on any time you need help. By having some to call, you will be able to ask for help whenever someone will be pressuring you to do something you have no interest in doing and prevent you to become a victim of a person and his substance abuse.

When you or friends of yours are already having problems with substances abuse, make sure to immediately get help. There are organizations that could help you get rid of the problem. You are not alone in facing these problems.
