The Benefits Of Installing Reclaimed Antique Exposed Beams

By Elaine Guthrie

The warmth of natural wood in a home can really make it stand out above the rest. There's something to be said about natural wood that's not only in furniture, but as architectural features in the home. Below, learn about the beauty of reclaimed antique exposed beams, and what they can do for any home, as well as how they can be used to provide the wow factor homeowners are always seeking.

Reclaimed wood is actually recycled wood. Much of this material comes from old barns and structures that are torn down for a variety of reasons. It has become quite the trend for both environmental reasons, but also for the beauty these pieces provide, to bring them into a home and leave them exposed to the naked eye.

As the recycling trend keeps expanding, people find themselves turning to recycled barn doors being installed in their homes. These are hung on specific hardware that allows them to glide across a wall to provide privacy from one room to another. Their function is similar to any other type of door, except for the fact that the hardware is designed so that they don't need any clearance in opening or closing. Therefore, it doesn't interfere with furniture placement, with regards to clearance.

With regards to exposed beams, they have already withstood the test of time for decades upon decades. Certainly, they show their age, so it's a wonderful way to provide interest in a room along the ceiling, which is typically neglected by homeowners. This is especially true of a room that is graced with high ceilings that can be made so much more impressive.

Even with low ceilings, such an addition will be a welcomed one that could be the subject of many conversations. These certified beams come with a history, so the new owners actually know where they were beforehand. They know that they could've come from a barn in the outskirts of town, or across the country, depending on the case.

Being certified means that they come from reputable dealers. As such, they are properly prepared to be reinstated for a new purpose in a home. Certainly, they are rustic by nature, so they would look outstanding in a rustic style home, a cabin up in the woods, and the like. Just as easily, however, they can look fabulous in a modern setting.

The beams could, through tricks used in the interior design world, be made to stand out even further. For example, the right lighting could be used to attract even more attention to them. The choice of size will also have an impact on how visible they are. They range in sizes, even as much as 12x12's, but these are usually upon request, as would be larger sizes. Of course, there is also wood species to consider.

Whatever the case, such an addition to any home would certainly increase its value if used wisely. For instance, in lower ceiling, it would be wise to choose a smaller beam rather than a very large one, and vice versa. Adding unique elements, such as this, that become focal points and architectural features in a home make it that much more interesting and desirable.
